Welcome to FAN-TASTIC FRIDAYS!! This is a new feature that we’ll be doing about the good times Team Socialite is looking forward to in the year ahead. The obvious first choice would be The Dinah. I hope you enjoy this new section.
Ok Lovelies! The new year has officially begun. We’ve toasted and cheered. We’ve analyzed Super Bowl commercials and are a lot of the country has seen A LOT of snow. It’s no wonder that lesbians everywhere begin counting the days to April and “lesbian Springbreak”, the one and only, World Famous Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend.
Held each spring, this year March 30 – April 3, 2016, for the last 26 years, Mariah Hanson and her team have been welcoming lesbians from all corners of the world, to the deserts of Palm Springs, California for four of the best days of the year. Over a quarter of a century is a long time to be hosting lesbians to come listen to some of the country’s biggest music acts and hottest DJ’s. It’s a weekend filled with sunshine, suntans and sultry nights filled with music and some of the world’s hottest women. The pool parties are jammed with great music, go-go grrls and cocktails flowing from every corner. There are vendors to help deck you out in the latest “queer gear”. You can even re-new your subscription to Curve Magazine, the country’s only national lesbian magazine.
I know what you’re thinking, “that’s great and all, but what about the music?” It’s true. Those gyrating girls on the pool deck, not to mention, 3 nights of parties, must be dancing to something good. The Dinah never disappoints, it is after all a music festival. So, let’s talk about this year and the music they’ve got lined up:
In part 1 of my 2-part story on the music, today I want to highlight the DJ’s:
Headliner Samantha Ronson – This is a personal favorite. I have been a fan for years. I last heard her at the after-party for the TrevorLIVE event in 2014. (Maybe I’ll print out our picture and have her sign it for me.) Her list of accomplishments is long and her talent has taken her all over the world. With so few, world famous female DJ’s, it’s always exciting when one is in the family.
Samantha Ronson is one of the premiere celebrity DJ’s, but she’s also the real deal. Our crowd is going to be blown away at her talent, energy and presence. I’ve wanted to book her for years, so for me, it’s an extra bonus that I am finally able to headline her at The Dinah.” –Mariah Hanson
I couldn’t agree more Mariah. She’s fantastic!
DJ Mary Mac – I’m looking forward to hearing this DJ. She’s worked with Madonna and credits Grandmaster Flash as one of her influences. Just seeing those two names in one sentence makes me excited to hear the sets she’s putting together for The Dinah.
DJ Lezlee – Ok I’m going to say it, she’s hot. Yes, physically she’s pretty easy on the eyes, what makes her hotter is when you get to watch her spin. She’s having a ball. I can honestly say, I’ve happily lost my mind to sets that she’s put together. You’re sweating, out of breath, can’t stop smiling, seriously-need-a-drink kind of sets that make a great DJ.
DJ Asha – You never know what you’re going to get, it will always be good. When you can read a crowd like DJ Asha, whatever she decides is right, will be exactly right. I don’t care what she plays, just as long as I get to be there to hear it.
DJ Automaton – This is an historic moment. This year The Dinah will be featuring a transgender DJ. While it’s hard enough breaking into the “old boys club” that is working as a professional DJ, the queer community’s representation needs to be more reflective of the true “flavah” that we bring to the music mix. I applaud this shift.
They’ve also got DJ Amara, DJ Angie Vee, Citizen Jane (she KILLED it at last year’s opening night party), GoodBoy (good vibes & electric energy), DJ MO, DJ Val G and LeahV
Then we need to talk about the celebrity DJ’s. This just proves that creative people can create using any medium:
Taryn Manning – yes from OITNB. Although, that’s just one of many of the things that she has her hands in. I have heard great things about her. She’s played all over the world and at some very hip parties. I’m excited to see what kind of set she puts together.
The X Names – aka Camila Grey of Uh Huh Her and Kate Moennig, the one and only Shane. I have a distinct memory of an after-party with my feet throbbing from new shoes and also the inability to sit down because the DJ’s were blowing my mind! Yep, it was The X Names. No, I don’t remember the party. Sorry, Lovelies. I can assure you that you will enjoy every beat and that wearing flats is probably a good idea.
My butt can barely stay in my seat writing this. The DJ’s aren’t the only thing that are going to keep you on your feet. In part 2, I’m going to talk about the live music performers I’m looking forward to hearing. Considering that I’ve seen, Iggy Azalea, EVE, Uh Huh Her, Megan Trainor, Tegan and Sara all live and up close at The Dinah, I can’t wait to tell you who’s going to be there this year.
